It’s about damn time.

Prior to research, it was unknown to us as a community whether or not we could use the original XR BMS PCB in conjunction with a larger battery pack in order to increase the range of our Boosted Boards. It was initially speculated that the XR PCB would refuse to function properly with a differently-sized battery pack since the XR BMS PCB has hardware that is capable of measuring the energy that comes and leaves the battery. It was assumed that the XR BMS PCB keeps track of the amount of energy leaving the system, and therefore, using a larger pack would be ineffective since it was speculated that the XR BMS PCB would refuse to allow the user to utilize the extra energy in the larger battery pack after a certain amount of energy was drawn.

This research has demonstrated that this speculated behavior is not accurate. There is no evidence that the XR BMS PCB actively logs the capacity of the battery that it is attached to, and the BMS reports state of charge similarly even when we increase the size of the battery pack.

Wondering how we did our testing?

Here’s our data and write-up. We believe these results are early, and we believe them to be accurate. There is more testing to be done in the future. If you’d like to participate in development, the report is publicly open for anyone to comment. If you believe there has been something overlooked in the data or the report, feel free to leave a public comment as yourself, or anonymously. If you would like to have a more active participation role, feel free to join us in our community!

40 pages is really intense. Want a plain-english technical breakdown?

Here’s a 30-minute video of us going through the entire document and discussing the results with you and what they mean for you in your not-so-distant-future as a Boosted Board rider. We believe it is very important that you are informed on the latest developments for future products, so if you can’t be bothered to read through 40 pages on your own, just put this video on, and we can go through it together!

You can’t buy the XXR… yet.

This is intentional. We believe in building our electric future by honoring the ESK8 lifestyle and putting forth good, reliable engineering through rigorous testing and rider feedback. There are a few questions that we are actively investigating as of now. We understand that this has been a highly requested upgrade for many Boosted Board owners. Before we make this commercially available, we need to determine how many riders would like this upgrade, as well as how much this upgrade would be worth to them. We also need to understand the engineering implications of making the battery pack bigger and how does that impact the rest of the riding experience, and industrial engineering, which at this time, is not known.

The best way to support our work is to join our community, or to speak to the researchers directly to give personalized feedback.
